screen time [installation]
SET, london
2021

our ‘downtime’ now consists of ‘screen time‘; as we take a break from irl stimulus, we enter our own digital world within our phones.

each world is unique, personalised for the user, paradoxically created by the user themselves.

the screen acts as a mirror: reflecting the self we want to see. and as a window: a look inside the self we desire to be.

screen time is the contemporary story of narcissus;
of how our technological devices have contributed to the insular, individualistic culture we exist in.

and of the condition of narcissism contained within the need to create a world of our own, a world that is experienced via a carefully constructed on-screen version of self.

ur downtime, ur time alone
u enter the world, on ur iphone

seduced by ur personal screen
ur avatar is sxc, silky smooth inbetween

ur internet friends r always awake
we global now bb, make no mistake

“hi @ insert name”
slide into ur dms
want u 2 play their game

seduced by my screen
and its reflection
my thirst for admiration
my need for attention

‘my little tech babe, who is the fairest of all?’
“u r mercedes, and together we rule”

narcissus, y2k
fixated with my image
24hrs a day

the endless scroll and the dopamine hit
“fire emoji, b u lookin lit”

i am obsessed, i must self surveil
what does this desire really entail?

seeking myself in my little tech b
the lust that i have for my own selfie

i feel euphoric inside my glossy shell
have i entered utopia, or is this u r l hell?

“dont leave me, mercedes”, phone light sucks me in
“i wont leave u! this lights too 🔥 on my skin!”
