ESSAY EXCERPT
The finance bros black leather lace-up flat. Erotic? It could be, I suppose, in a basic machismo kind of way. Worn by the straight-edged male product of Western patriarchy, its flatness signifies ‘sensible’, ‘safe’. A key component of his uniform, the man in the polished flat does not seek to venture beyond convention; he is agreeable, enjoys rules. Unlike the uniforms of soldiers, police officers or mechanics, affiliated with physicality and getting dirty, the man who wears the ironed shirt and shapely flat is removed from the erotic in our culture. The systematic nature of his labour places him in a different realm to operational or manual labourers.
