mercedes 666: CYBER PEEP SHOW examines our contemporary experience of desire by drawing parallels between online space and Lacan’s theory of the gaze.

in his book, The Four Fundamental Concepts of Psychoanalysis, Lacan describes a metaphorical screen between two people as the cause of desire; he claims that this screen leads to a ‘lack’ of representation of self and that we are therefore perceived in part by the other persons projection of a ‘self’ onto us.

designed to be projected into a real life window as a night time installation, CYBER PEEP SHOW replicates that of a traditional peep show.  mercedes’ performance mimics an ‘in real time’ interaction as she appears to respond to her audience’s gaze whilst sitting on her gamer chair in ‘cyberspace’.

the piece plays on the voyeuristic qualities of the window and the screen, commenting on the evolution of exhibitionism through our technological advances.
